Sometimes a glance, a smell, a messy street is enough for God to change the speed of the soul. There are some cities that one only steps in once and stays in forever; there are others to which one returns not because they are easy, but because they teach, because they call. And there are those who, without intending to, discover that to serve is not to lower one's gaze but to raise it to a concrete, fragile, unrepeatable face. Jessica Hernandez, consecrated of the Regnum Christi, He knew those kinds of places and encounters, those that transform what one understands by love.

Jessica Hernández was born and raised in Puebla (Mexico), the youngest of three sisters, in a family where faith was lived naturally. There were no great revelations or spectacular moments in her childhood; rather it was a slow maturation, woven by small experiences and accompanied by concrete people. From an early age she was part of the ECYD and Regnum Christi, and in these environments she learned to work with others, to see the needs of others and to discover that faith takes shape when it is shared. Since she was a child, she was inhabited by a restlessness that was difficult to name, a question that she did not yet know how to formulate: how to love as Christ loves, how to give life in a real way and not only in a desired way. She herself sums it up simply when she recalls that «the call to do something for others and, above all, to do it with others, always resonated in me. Sometimes a vocation begins like that, without fanfare: like something that accompanies you, stays with you and comes back, until one day it takes shape.

Arriving without expectations allowed Jessica to receive what God had in store for her; she arrived with an open heart and mind, unshielded, not anticipating the experience (Image credit: Jessica Hernández).

God whispers before asking for everything

At the age of 18, when many teenagers are barely deciding between studies and dreams, Jessica received a clarity that is not usually granted without an inner struggle. It was during the Holy Week evangelization missions: the rhythm of the service, the towns they visited, the early morning prayer, the tiredness that transforms into joy when serving, the Christ who looks from the eyes of the needy... everything came together in an instant of lucidity. It was not an emotional flash, but a deep, serene certainty, one of those that cannot be discussed. There she understood that God was calling her to give herself totally, consecrated in Regnum Christi. What for others is an intuition or a question, for her it was an answer: a yes that began as a promise and, over the years, became a path, discipline, love and perseverance. Almost 25 years have passed since that day, and it can still be said that it was a convinced yes, sustained by the One who first called her.

His story becomes more intense when he goes to Calcutta, a city that, for many, is the starkest symbol of poverty. His first trip was not a personal quest or a long-dreamed-of desire. It was the invitation of a group of young people from Regnum Christi in Seville. He said yes without imagining what it meant. Arriving without expectations allowed him to receive what God had prepared for him; he arrived with an open heart and mind, without armor, without anticipating the experience. What he found was not easy. Poverty was not in a particular neighborhood, but everywhere. The streets, the environment, the humidity, the thin bodies. Jessica confesses that after that first trip she did not want to go back. It is not shameful to say it; honesty also evangelizes. The human heart has limits and defends itself when something shakes it too much. Calcutta, in that first encounter, was more wounded than light.

«In Calcutta, serving reveals your own poverty. Years later, another group of young people asked him to accompany them again. He accepted. This second visit was totally different, almost the opposite. The suffering was still real, but now she could look it in the face without running away; the service did not wear her down, it unified her; the poverty did not repel her, it embraced her from the inside. One who has returned to a place that hurt can come to understand that one does not come back the same. Calcutta then became one of the most transformative gifts of her life. «I would come back every summer.», He says today with serenity, because there too he found a place where the Gospel is made flesh.

Because in Calcutta the Gospel is not a speech: it is warm water wiping a back marked by suffering. But Jessica explains it by saying that you don't just feed the hungry; you discover that you are the thirsty one. Serving reveals your own poverty. It locates you. It brings you back to the essential. There is Calcutta in every city (Image credit: Jessica Hernández).

Calcutta marked her inside and taught her something else: that it is not necessary to cross oceans to touch pain. There is Calcutta in every city. In the migrant who sleeps under a bridge. In the neighbor who lives alone. In the child who asks for attention more than bread. In the brother in the Church who needs to be listened to with patience. And here Jessica affirms: living with the poor transforms the gaze in a way that cannot be learned in theory. It is not to romanticize poverty, but to dignify it. It is not to go to «help», it is to allow the poor to evangelize with their resilience, their gratitude, their mysterious way of surviving by loving.

The young people who accompanied her were witnesses and protagonists of this silent transformation. At first they greeted her from a distance, with a certain defensive distance. As the days went by, and almost without realizing it, they began to get closer. To heal wounds, to clean, even to delouse, to embrace without fear, without gloves. And then, when Eucharistic adoration arrived, I saw them immersed in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. As if the Lord took in his hands all that they had touched: the wound, the smell, the fragile skin, the tired feet. And transformed it into an offering. There Jéssica was able to see that the mission is not only in doing, but in letting oneself be done by Love.

From that experience, Jessica reads the charism of Regnum Christi with a new depth. When she listens «not to lock yourself in a bunker», understands that the risk of a comfortable spiritual life is to stagnate, like water that does not flow. That a community without an exit becomes a museum of good intentions. That the mission is not a project, but an identity, and that we are apostles, not executors of the apostolate. She says something provocative, but true: «sometimes it is easier to clean up a poor man than to accept your brother's weakness.». In Calcutta he learned that the poverty of others is a mirror; that the misery we find most difficult to touch is not that of the stranger, but that of the one who walks beside us every day. And yet, it is there that the most real aspect of the Gospel is at stake.

At the beginning of the mission, the young people greeted from a distance, at a certain defensive distance. Over the days, and almost without realizing it, they began to approach the people they served (Image credit: Jessica Hernández).

Because the mission is to go out of oneself without closing oneself in. To learn to listen before speaking. To serve before evaluating. To let Christ take us out of the temperate zones to lead us to the paths where the world hurts and is reborn. The Church needs less volunteers who comply for the sake of compliance and more hearts that burn to help. Less strategies and more presence. Less fear and more compassion.

A return that changes perspectives

Her two trips to Calcutta were not isolated episodes. They are seeds for those who also feel within themselves a voice calling. His experience becomes a message for those who seek to walk as a community of apostles going forth. Where is my Calcutta? From whom do I turn away out of fear or weariness? What realities is God calling me to look at squarely?

For Jéssica, to grow in vocation is not just to remain. It is letting the gift mature with concrete names, concrete places, concrete faces. Her experience in Calcutta is an invitation to live the faith with her hands open, her eyes awake and her heart going out.

Because consecrated life is not a refuge, but an open door. And mission is not a task, but a breath of the Spirit. Calcutta did not end when Jessica returned home.
