In the heart of the desert of Coahuila, Cuatro Ci\u00e9negas -<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>known as \u00abthe Galapagos of Mexico\u00bb.\u00bb<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>- has become for almost two decades the scene of a silent transformation driven by the missionary presence of Alfonso and Maricarmen Gonzalez. The persistence of poverty and social problems raised a decisive question along the way: are periodic missions enough to change a reality, or is a stable accompaniment required that commits the whole community and bets on the future?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Since Holy Week 2005, Alfonso and Maricarmen Gonzalez began visiting Cuatro Cienegas as missionaries. Year after year they returned with the desire to accompany families and offer hope, but over time the limits of a model based solely on sporadic missions became increasingly evident.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

After 11 years of constant presence, they found that poverty and social problems not only persisted, but worsened. The satisfaction of each completed mission coexisted with an uncomfortable question: how to translate that effort into real and lasting change for the community.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This concern led them to discern a new path that would not depend on isolated visits, but on a stable and structured accompaniment.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

From one-time mission to community transformation<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

From this realization was born in 2016 the\u00a0Plan 2040<\/a>, an initiative developed together with\u00a0Catholic World Mission<\/em><\/a> and in collaboration with local authorities, social organizations and public institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Its goal is clear: to comprehensively transform the community through long-term solutions centered on five axes -<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>health, education, family, spirituality and employment<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>-so that each family's quality of life is improved and each child has a real chance to develop to his or her full potential.<\/span><\/p>\n

Daniel Brandenburg, L.C., who has been accompanying this project for more than five years, emphasizes that one of the most valuable features of Plan 2040 is its integral approach, capable of articulating the family environment, the parish, local culture, social structures and health care in a single process of formation and human development.<\/p>\n

In es<\/span>t<\/span>e\u00a0<\/span>process<\/span>The project has evolved from a sum of activities to a community dynamic that involves the local church, the authorities and the families themselves as protagonists of its growth.<\/span><\/p>\n

All <\/span>childhood<\/span>\u00a0account<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

One of the most innovative pillars of the project is its decision to reach 100 % of the children of Cuatro Cienegas, a town of about 13,000 inhabitants.<\/p>\n

Each child<\/span>, from<\/span>\u00a0that is born<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0is integrated into an accompaniment program that involves the whole family, with personalized attention and continuous follow-up.<\/span><\/p>\n

Each home is visited, parents are oriented, access to health and education services is facilitated, employment opportunities are promoted, and accompaniment is provided in the experience of faith, the sacraments and spiritual formation.<\/p>\n

Thus, childcare becomes a key component of the\u00a0<\/span>work<\/span>\u00a0of generational transformation that seeks to break the cycle of poverty at its root.<\/span><\/p>\n

A path linking ecology, prayer and employment<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

This social dimension was joined, a few years later, by an initiative that intertwines mission, ecology and spirituality.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

When acquiring the Las Playitas land, in the watershed of\u00a0<\/span>Cuatroci\u00e9negas<\/span>, Alfonso and Maricarmen sought to integrate it into Plan 2040.<\/span><\/p>\n

From this discernment was born the Camino de San Jos\u00e9, a 12-mile pilgrimage through the desert of Coahuila, with 14 stations inspired by the book of Fr.\u00a0<\/span>Brandenburg<\/span>, L.C.:\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Lessons from St. Joseph's workshop<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Ecotourism initiatives - wine tasting, stargazing, cycling, kayaking - have also been developed around Las Playitas, generating employment for local families, with a commitment to reinvest 100 % of the hotel's income back into the community.<\/p>\n

Pilgrimage to serve<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Today, those who come to Cuatro Ci\u00e9negas not only walk the Camino de San Jos\u00e9, but also integrate themselves as volunteers in the life of the town.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Visits to the families, direct accompaniment and daily coexistence allow the pilgrims to learn first-hand about the scope of Plan 2040.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For Alfonso and Maricarmen, this combination of service, prayer and rest offers an experience that strengthens their faith and awakens a renewed sense of mission in their own lives.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It is a concrete way of moving from amazement at reality to personal commitment to the transformation of communities.<\/span><\/p>\n

An invitation to keep walking<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

In the same vein, Fr. Daniel has announced a new mission from March 11 to 15, 2026, organized in conjunction with\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Lumen\u00a0<\/span>Action<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/em>\u00a0&\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Catholic<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>World<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Mission<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

During these days, participants will live with local families, collaborate in community projects and walk the \u00abCamino de San Jos\u00e9\u00bb for three days.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The proposal is to go into the heart of Cuatro Ci\u00e9negas to discover how sustained accompaniment, lived with faith and purpose, can generate profound transformations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alfonso and Maricarmen Gonzalez, residents of Monterrey and parents of six children -<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>one of them, Br. Jos\u00e9 Andr\u00e9s, a Legionary seminarian in his third year of formation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>-They summarize the spirit of the project they have been promoting for almost two decades: to help every person in Cuatro Cienegas to live with dignity, to discover their place in God's heart and to become, in turn, the protagonist of the renewal of their own community.<\/span><\/p>\n
