The journey of Father Martín Ribas, a Legionary of Christ, crosses countries, languages and very different realities, united by the same common thread: the call to serve. The mission does not consist only in going far away, but in living each mission with the conviction that the Gospel can transform any reality when it is proclaimed with closeness, faith and hope.

For Father Martin, the missionary experience is not only a geographical destination, but also a way of living one's vocation. Going on mission means leaving one's comfort zone to go out to meet others, wherever they are: in a big city, in an indigenous community or in a beach parish. It is a constant availability, a Church going out to form apostles and accompany families in their daily lives.

<img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-117689" src="https://regnumchristi.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/PMartin1.webp" alt="P. Martín Ribas, L.C.).

Father Martin, how did you come to the mission in the Mayan area of Quintana Roo and what motivated you to go?

My first departure from Europe was to Monterrey, in northern Mexico. I had always studied and worked in different European countries, but in Monterrey I discovered more strongly my passion for the missions. We would go during Holy Week and in the summer with young people to simple communities, and I loved to stay with the people, especially with those who came home late from work. I felt that evangelization could not be limited to comfortable schedules.

I then went on to collaborate in the Mano Amiga School, with people of limited resources. There we promoted a rehabilitation clinic for women with addictions, a small medical dispensary and various social aids. That experience confirmed my desire to serve those in need.

When the need arose for a priest in the Mayan zone, I gladly accepted. I arrived first as parochial vicar. From the second day I was taking the sick to the hospital and distributing food parcels. I fell in love with the mission from the beginning.

How long were you in the Mayan area and what is your current mission?

I arrived in August 2020. A few days later I had to travel to Madrid due to the hospitalization of my mother, who died during that trip. Then I returned and stayed five years in the Mayan area, attending a parish with 35 villages and about 45 churches and pastoral centers. We were only two priests for everything.

At present I am still in Quintana Roo, but in Playa del Carmen. Here I am practically starting a new parish: we have a main parish, some chapels and several sectors where we celebrate even in simple structures or outdoors. The reality is different: fewer Mayan communities and more migrant population from different states of Mexico who work mainly in the hotel industry.

In the Mayan area, Father Martín served a parish with 35 villages and about 45 churches and pastoral centers (Image credit: Fr. In the Mayan zone, I visited several villages every week to attend to them at least once a month. There was a lot of sacramental life there: baptisms, marriages, celebrations. The people, although less expressive, were very faithful to their religious traditions.

In Playa del Carmen, the reality is more urban and presents more visible social problems: drugs, alcohol, violence and promiscuity. But the mission is the same: to love and serve. I continue to support Mayan evangelizers and a daily radio program in the Mayan language.

<img decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-117691" src="https://regnumchristi.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/PMartin4.webp" alt="P. After that, each day is different: religion classes in a school, spiritual care, blessing of houses, visits to the sick, accompaniment and formation of couples... During the week there are Masses in different sectors, as well as confessions and meetings with apostolic groups. Saturdays and Sundays are focused almost entirely on Masses and confessions. In the parish there are about 1,300 children in catechesis and many adults preparing for baptism.

How would you describe the people who live there?

They are hardworking, resilient and very religious. Many work long hours in hotels; some mothers leave home at three in the morning and return in the afternoon. Housing tends to be small and expensive, and many families live with great economic effort. In spite of this, there is a strong search for God. They participate in Eucharistic adoration, rosaries and catechesis and actively collaborate in the parish. There are adults who are preparing to be baptized and there is a deep respect for the priest.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-117692" src="https://regnumchristi.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/PMartinRibas.webp" alt="P. Martín Ribas, L.C.)

There is also witchcraft and syncretism in that area. What have you found?

Yes, it is a frequent reality, both in Mayan communities and in the city. There are superstitions, distorted devotions and people who turn to witchcraft to ask for health, money or even to harm someone.

Our response as a Church is clear: sacramental life, confession, Eucharist, prayer and formation. We also use exorcised sacramentals, such as water, salt and oil. When the case requires it, the matter is taken to the diocesan exorcist or mental health professionals. Many times there is a mixture of spiritual, psychological and social problems.

I have seen cases in which psychiatric help, together with spiritual accompaniment, has been decisive in rescuing lives. It is also important to discern well: not everything is spiritual influence; sometimes it is necessary to go to a doctor or psychiatrist. The mission demands faith, but also prudence.

In the face of such harsh realities, how does one sustain oneself spiritually?

With a deep life of union with God. The formation we have received teaches us that we do not act in our own strength, but that we are instruments in the hands of God. Prayer, Mass, the Rosary, frequent confession and trust in God are essential.

After all these years, how has your understanding of the priesthood changed?

I have understood that I cannot live in a “bubble”. The priest is called to serve on all fronts: the sick, the poor, the young, wounded marriages, victims of violence, addictions, etc.

I dream of creating a foundation that will last over time and work in three main areas: evangelization and integral formation; educational support for people to get ahead; and medical care for those who cannot access it.

The key is to train people who train others. It is not a matter of everything depending on you, but of generating a chain of goods that lasts over time.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-117693" src="https://regnumchristi.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/PMartin3.webp" alt="P. Martín Ribas, L.C.)

What role does the family play in the social problems you observe?

The family is the foundation. Many wounds come from homes marked by abandonment, violence or absence of parents. If a child does not learn to love at home, it will be difficult to transmit love later on.

For this reason, it is fundamental to form married couples and young people in authentic love. Without a clear reference to God and human dignity, the moral and social sense is lost. Evangelization of the heart is essential for the healing of society.

What does being a missionary priest mean to you today?

It means to have given one's life completely to God and to be his instrument. The priest is the mediator of the sacraments, especially confession, which I consider one of the most beautiful missions: he not only forgives sins, but also guides, heals and accompanies others.

The mission does not depend on the place - jungle or city - but on living united to God and transmitting his love. It is to help people to come out of sin and vices, to rediscover their dignity as children of God and to build a fuller human and Christian life.

About Fr. Martín Ribas, L.C.

Born in Madrid, in a family of five siblings - with a Majorcan father and German mother -, he grew up in an international environment and attended his first studies at the German School of Madrid. It was during his time at the El Prado school that he began a journey of greater depth in faith that would end up marking his life.

He came to know Regnum Christi through his family, especially his sister, and soon discovered in this charism a vocational call. He joined the Legion in Madrid and completed his formation in Salamanca and Rome. During those years he carried out apostolic practices in different European countries, which allowed him to broaden his pastoral and cultural outlook.

After his ordination to the priesthood, he was sent to Germany and Austria until he was asked to go to Mexico, where he has been on mission for thirteen years: eight in Monterrey, five working with Mayan communities and, currently, in Playa del Carmen.

A vocation forged between Europe and America, marked by work with families, missionary life and the constant desire to proclaim the Gospel in very diverse contexts. In this interview he shares his journey, his challenges and the richness of his pastoral experience.

Throughout his journey - from Europe to America, from academic formation to direct work with communities - Father Martin has experienced that mission is not a stage, but a permanent way of dedication.

I dream of creating a foundation that will last over time and work in three main areas: evangelization and integral formation; educational support for people to get ahead; and medical care for those who cannot access it.

[3471
3069,3566,128
post-117687","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-entrevista","tag-evangelizacion","tag-mayas","tag-misiones

P.
