Joaqu\u00edn Garc\u00eda Mauri\u00f1o was ordained permanent deacon a year ago. During this time he has carried out his ministry in the parish of Nuestra Se\u00f1ora de la Asunci\u00f3n, in Madrid. He is married to Rosina Seral and has two daughters. He has been a member of Regnum Christi for 27 years, and has collaborated with Missionary Family<\/a>\u00a0and with the premarital courses of the\u00a0DIF<\/a>. A happy coincidence: among his intentions, the Pope has requested that during the month of May the Church\u00a0pray especially for the deacons<\/a>, who are those who \u201cdedicate themselves to the service of the word and of the poor\u201d. Joaqu\u00edn explains in this interview with Lo+RC<\/a> He tells us that he is dedicated to the sick in the parish, \u201cI bring them communion and a bit of company, they also need it\u201d. In Spain there are about 500 deacons, a little more than 30 in Madrid. But these figures are a far cry from those of the United States, where there are 16,000.<\/p>\n

Joaqu\u00edn, what exactly is a permanent deacon?<\/h4>\n

It is the male, usually married, who is consecrated to the Church in the lower grade within the sacrament of Holy Orders. His principal function is to exercise the charitable action of the Church in dedication to the service of the poorest and neediest. It also has functions within the liturgy and can impart some sacraments such as baptism and marriage. We are also in charge of distributing communion and exposing the Blessed Sacrament and can preside over the celebration of funerals.<\/p>\n

You have just celebrated your first anniversary of ordination, how have you lived this year?<\/h4>\n

It has gone by very fast, almost without my noticing. It has been a year of learning and deepening in the ministry of the diaconate. You perceive how the Holy Spirit is molding you and leading you in your life. It has not been a year of great activity, but I have experienced many moments in which you glimpse the work that can be done as a deacon and the great need to communicate Jesus Christ and to be at the side of the most vulnerable.<\/p>\n

What about your family?<\/h4>\n

We are happy with this new stage that is presented to us, because the whole family participates in the diaconate. Service to others has been a constant that we have tried to live in our family and now even more so.<\/p>\n

How do you combine diaconate, professional work and your family life?<\/h4>\n

Doing a little bit of jigsaw puzzle until each piece fits into place. I live every moment of my life as a deacon and I always keep in mind that dedication to others is the main thing in any of the areas in which I move.<\/p>\n

How do you combine belonging to Regnum Christi and being a permanent deacon?<\/h4>\n

So far so good. It is a great joy to be able to participate in the liturgical celebrations with the Legionaries. I had the joy of attending the diaconate ordination of Fr. Pou and of welcoming him into the order of deacons, a gesture that takes place during the ordination ritual. On the other hand, the activity in the apostolate tasks, as a result of the ordination, are seen from another perspective, I can do more things! Especially in what we are more involved, such as Missionary Family, although this year it could not be.<\/p>\n

The Pope has asked that we pray especially for deacons during this month of May, an endorsement of a form of dedication that is very unknown in the Church!<\/h4>\n

Indeed, the Pope, as his pontificate is being, of dedication to the poorest, sees in the deacons the personification of this indispensable task within the Church. He is insisting that the dedication of the permanent deacon should be more focused on the attention to the most needy and not so much on his presence at the altar. The permanent diaconate is a little known ministry in Spain, there are even Church people who have many gaps, and in some dioceses they do not even have a presence. Here in Madrid, Cardinal Carlos Osoro, is in the same line as the Pope giving more entity and public presence to the deacons in the ordinations or accompanied by a permanent deacon in almost all his celebrations.<\/p>\n

The Pope says that deacons dedicate themselves to the service of the word and of the poor.<\/h4>\n

My dedication to the Word is centered on the reading of the Gospel; whenever I plan to read it, I prepare it beforehand, so as not to make mistakes when reading and, fundamentally, to go deeper into the Word of God, which always has something new to tell us; and on some occasions I have had to prepare the homily.<\/p>\n

My dedication to the poor has focused on those who are unable to attend the parish because of their illness and I bring them communion and some company, which they also need.<\/p>\n

Why are you \u201ca life-giving sign of the Church\u201d, as the Pope asks?<\/h4>\n

Service to one's neighbor, and especially to the most needy, is a fundamental task in the life of the Church. And the Pope, as I said before, has a special predilection for these people, and the deacon is the sign, the example, the personification of dedication to the weakest. The fact that there are more deacons makes more visible the service that sustains the life of the Church.<\/p>\n

What does a permanent deacon do during coronavirus?<\/h4>\n

There is much to do, from assisting the sick in hospitals or nursing homes, celebrating funerals in cemeteries, assisting those who are in need or attending to those who are alone, by telephone. We must not forget the opportunity for long moments of prayer and study in order to deepen our understanding of the Word of God and thus be able to transmit it with a profound sense of charity.<\/p>\n
