Seoul hosts World Youth Day 2027: Christ’s invitation to the East

JMJ 2027 en Seúl: la invitación de Cristo a peregrinar hacia Oriente

The Church is already preparing for World Youth Day (WYD) 2027 in Seoul—an invitation to journey East with spiritual and ecclesial meaning, opening new frontiers of dialogue and mission. Choosing Seoul as the next WYD host signals more than a geographic shift: it is a chance to deepen the universality of faith, embrace diverse cultures, and highlight the vitality of Catholic communities across Asia. In light of this, thousands of young people from around the world are beginning to wonder how they will live this unique experience in a country shaped by dynamism, history, and the witness of countless martyrs. What will this global gathering mean for the Church on pilgrimage in the 21st century, and how is Regnum Christi preparing to respond with enthusiasm and missionary spirit to the Holy Father’s call?

In Korea, Catholics represent about 11% of the population, and the Church is known for its vibrant pastoral initiatives, missionary outreach, and the powerful legacy of martyrs whose witness continues to inspire worldwide. That vitality is now paving the way for the welcome of hundreds of thousands of young people expected to gather in 2027 for World Youth Day. Regnum Christi has also begun preparing, with its Life and Mission Area already coordinating participation for WYD Seoul 2027.

Regnum Christi in Korea: Preparing for Seoul 2027

Today, the pastoral work of four Legionaries in Korea has been essential in keeping the local mission alive. Their dedication has sparked joy and enthusiasm among Regnum Christi groups, who now look forward to welcoming young people from across the globe at World Youth Day 2027.

In this context, Brother Sanggu Kang, L.C., a Korean religious currently studying in Rome, shares a glimpse into Korea’s spiritual identity.

“Regnum Christi arrived in Korea at the invitation of Cardinal Emeritus Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk, who welcomed the Legionaries for their charism and spirituality, confident they would bring new life to the diocesan Church. One of the greatest treasures of the Korean Church is the spirituality of its martyrs—most of them lay people who, despite having little contact with priests, were ready to give their lives. Their faith and courage continue to inspire today. Many have already been canonized or beatified, and others are on the path to sainthood. I hope that both East and West may see in these martyrs a model of faith for our secular age, where following Christ still calls for courage and sacrifice.”

World Youth Day 2027 will be more than a celebration. It will be a chance to strengthen communion through an International Regnum Christi Youth Gathering, where the shared mission can be lived more deeply.

Although the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life, which oversees World Youth Day, has yet to announce practical or logistical details for the events in Korea, Regnum Christi has already begun identifying who’s interested in participating, so they can anticipate organizational needs and make future planning easier.

World Youth Day in Seoul is officially scheduled for August 3–8, 2027. Ahead of the celebrations, Regnum Christi plans to host an International Youth Gathering on August 2 in Seoul, as part of its preparations.

As the dates approach, communities will receive more details to help them prepare for this historic pilgrimage. The journey in preparation for World Youth Day Seoul 2027 is already unfolding, marked by unity, hope, and a shared mission.
