From the Holy Gospel according to Luke 5, 1-11
At that time people were crowding around Jesus to hear the word of God, as he stood on the shore of the lake of Gennesaret. He saw two boats standing by the shore; the fishermen had disembarked and were washing their nets. He went into one of the boats, Simon's boat, and asked him to move it a little from the land. From the boat he sat down and taught the people. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch. Simon answered, ”Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; but at your word I will let down the nets. So they set to work and made a haul of fish so large that the net burst. They beckoned to the partners in the other boat to come and lend them a hand. They came and filled the two boats, which were almost sinking. When Simon Peter saw this, he threw himself at Jesus“ feet, saying, ”Depart from me, for I am a sinner, O Lord. And astonishment had seized him and those who were with him, when they saw the haul of fish they had caught; and the same thing happened to James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were Simon's companions. Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be fishers of men.” And they drew their boats to land, and leaving everything, they followed him.

Meditate on what God tells you in the Gospel
Sudor. Cansancio. Hartazgo. El calor evaporaba la piel de los pescadores, y el dolor que Pedro sentía en la espalda era ya insoportable. Cuanto más intentaba, menos esperanzas tenía. “Volvamos a la orilla” dijo a sus compañeros.
La voz del Maestro: “¡Bienaventurados los pobres de espíritu!” “¡Sean misericordiosos los unos con los otros!”. “¿Quién es éste?”. Su semblante. Su luz. Su mirada era como el paso de una estrella fugaz: pocas veces visto, difícil de captar por primera vez, y a la vez, fascinante.
La multitud se acongoja. Quiere más milagros, más parábolas. ¡Más! ¡Más! “¡Hazte para allá!”. “¡Por favor, déjenme pasar con mi niño para que lo cure!”. Gritos, empujones, golpes, números, masa, personas, y más personas, y más personas. “¿Puedo subirme a su barca?” dijo el predicador. “¿Por qué no?”.
Al contacto con el Señor, la vida no puede seguir igual. Es un consecuente necesario. “La libertad está, pues, en Dios y el alma que de veras saltando por encima de todo, asiente en Él su vida… ¡Amar a Dios! ¡Vivir de lo que es infinito!… He aquí lo que es libertad”. (San Rafael Arnaiz, carta del 14 de diciembre de 1936). Pedro, no necesitaba darle al Maestro un lugar en la barca, pero seguramente nunca se arrepintió de haberlo hecho. Hay que dejar entrar al Maestro, dejar que su voz entre, indique y realice el milagro. Sólo en el misterio de su voluntad está el milagro. Pedro, aceptó su llegada ¿La aceptaré hoy yo?
«Es una pesca milagrosa, un signo del poder de la palabra de Jesús: cuando nos ponemos con generosidad a su servicio, Él obra grandes cosas en nosotros. Así actúa con cada uno de nosotros: nos pide que lo acojamos en la barca de nuestra vida, para recomenzar con él a surcar un nuevo mar, que se revela cuajado de sorpresas. Su invitación a salir al mar abierto de la humanidad de nuestro tiempo, a ser testigos de la bondad y la misericordia, da un nuevo significado a nuestra existencia, que a menudo corre el riesgo de replegarse sobre sí misma. A veces, podemos sentirnos sorprendidos y titubeantes ante la llamada del Maestro Divino, y tentados a rechazarlo porque no nos sentimos a la altura». (S.S.
