Lord renew me..., renew my heart.
Gospel of the day (to guide your meditation)
From the Holy Gospel according to Mark 3:13-19
At that time Jesus went up on the mountain, called those whom he wanted, and they followed him. He appointed twelve to stay with him, to be sent out to preach, and to have power to cast out demons. Then he appointed the twelve: Simon, to whom he gave the name Peter; then James and John, sons of Zebedee, to whom he gave the name Boanergues, that is, “sons of thunder”; Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who later betrayed him.
Word of the Lord.
Meditate on what God tells you in the Gospel
There are traditions, habits, customs that we tend to do and we no longer realize why we do them. It is part of a certain routine in which we are unconsciously immersed.
Jesus, somehow, when he meets the Pharisees, wants to raise a question in their hearts: Why do they do this? Not simply to cast doubt but to find a reason.
Without realizing it, they had placed the law, their tradition, their customs above man. The law must always be at the service of man and it exists to guide, to maintain the order that Jesus came to give in fullness..., it must be a law of love.
This is the true meaning of the law of God; a law that leads man to be man and, therefore, leads him to an openness towards others, an openness that always leads to love. And on the basis of this law of love Jesus called those he wanted and sent them to preach and to cast out demons.
That is the renewal of the law to which Jesus wants to invite those who are blinded by routine, by customs and traditions..., so that we can live in the freedom of the law of love.
«There is a choice: Jesus chose those he wanted. And, precisely, he instituted Twelve. He called them apostles. There were others: there were the disciples, and the Gospel speaks of seventy-two, on one occasion. But these were something else. The Twelve are instituted to be with him and to send them to preach with the power to cast out demons. It is the most important group that Jesus chose, to be with him and to send them to preach the Gospel. And with the power to cast out demons. Precisely the Twelve are the first bishops, the first group of bishops».
(Homily of H.H. Francis, January 22, 2016, in Santa Marta).
