Por aquellos días, le llegó a Isabel la hora de dar a luz y tuvo un hijo. Cuando sus vecinos y parientes se enteraron de que el Señor le había manifestado tan grande misericordia, se regocijaron con ella. A los ocho días fueron a circuncidar al niño y le querían poner Zacarías, como su padre; pero la madre se opuso, diciéndoles: “No. Su nombre será Juan”. Ellos decían: “Pero si ninguno de tus parientes se llama así”. Entonces le preguntaron por señas al padre cómo quería que se llamara el niño. Él pidió una tablilla y escribió: “Juan es su nombre”. Todos se quedaron extrañados. En ese momento a Zacarías se le soltó la lengua, recobró el habla y empezó a bendecir a Dios. Un sentimiento de temor se apoderó de los vecinos y en toda región montañosa de Judea se comentaba este suceso. Cuantos se enteraban de ello se preguntaban impresionados: “¿Qué va a ser de este niño?” Esto lo decían, porque realmente la mano de Dios estaba con él. El niño se iba desarrollando físicamente y su espíritu se iba fortaleciendo, y vivió en el desierto hasta el día en que se dio a conocer al pueblo de Israel.

Meditate on what God tells you in the Gospel
On today's feast, in which the Church celebrates the birth of the forerunner, we should ask ourselves: What is our attitude as apostle and forerunner for the second coming of our Savior Jesus Christ?
It is a good composition of place to imagine Jesus and John as children playing, what would they talk about, what would they play, what would it be like when Mary found out about John's birth?
Let us contemplate those moments in our hearts, let us make the effort to silence our worries, our pending and let us remain for a moment accompanying Elizabeth and Zacharias and, if necessary, let us read the Gospel again and let us try to find some detail, some light.
Miremos la actitud de Zacarías, su fidelidad a lo que el Señor le pide en algo que parece tan simple quizás para nosotros, pero no para la cultura hebrea ya que es el nombre de su hijo primogénito.Qué duro, pero qué bello poder ser fiel a Dios en algo tan pequeño.Y justamente es eso lo que nos pide a cada uno de nosotros todos los días, en los detalles de las cosas que hacemos, no sólo por deber, sino que es nuestro medio de santificación. por eso lo hacemos con amor y responsabilidad teniendo presente nuestra condición de hijos de Dios.
Let us ask St. John the Baptist to help us to be faithful in our mission as apostles of Christ wherever he asks us to be, knowing that our ordinary daily life is an opportunity to attain holiness.
«Like yesterday, God is still looking for allies, still looking for men and women capable of believing, capable of remembering, capable of feeling part of his people in order to cooperate with the creativity of the Spirit. God continues to walk our neighborhoods and our streets, he goes everywhere in search of hearts capable of listening to his invitation and of making it become flesh here and now. Paraphrasing St. Ambrose, we can say: God continues to look for hearts like Mary's, ready to believe even in absolutely exceptional conditions. May the Lord increase in us this faith and hope».
