From the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew 20:1-16
At that time, Jesus told his disciples this parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who, at dawn, went out to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with them to pay them a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. He went out again at midmorning, saw some who were standing idle in the marketplace, and said to them, ‘You also go into my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.’ He went out again in the middle of the day and in the middle of the afternoon and did the same.
Por último, salió también al caer la tarde y encontró todavía a otros que estaban en la plaza y les dijo: ‘¿Por qué han estado aquí todo el día sin trabajar?’ Ellos le respondieron: ‘Porque nadie nos ha contratado’. Él les dijo: ‘Vayan también ustedes a mi viña’.
When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, ‘Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last until you reach the first’. So those who had arrived at dusk came forward and received a denarius each.
When it was the turn of those who came first, they thought they would receive more; but they too received a denarius each. When they received it, they began to complain to the owner, saying, ‘Those who came last worked only one hour, and yet you pay them the same as us, who bore the burden of the day and the heat.’.
Pero él respondió a uno de ellos: ‘Amigo, yo no te hago ninguna injusticia. ¿Acaso no quedamos en que te pagaría un denario? Toma, pues, lo tuyo y vete. Yo quiero darle al que llegó al último lo mismo que a ti. ¿Qué no puedo hacer con lo mío lo que yo quiero? ¿O vas a tenerme rencor porque yo soy bueno?’.
Likewise, the last shall be first, and the first shall be last”.

Meditate on what God tells you in the Gospel
Nunca es tarde para entregarme por entero a Cristo. Su llamada está siempre presente y actual. Su invitación a que sea santo, a que haga su voluntad, es permanente. Para Cristo no existe un momento inoportuno. Lo importante es que nunca desoiga su llamada.
Él conoce mi pequeñez, mi debilidad, mis defectos. Él sabe que puedo fallar, y que de hecho fallaré, pero eso no le impide llamarme. Él quiere verme luchar, quiere verme entregándome libremente, amarlo libremente. A Él no le importa si llega desde la mañana o al caer la tarde, lo único que le importa es que llegue.
Su amor nunca me abandona. Él siempre está a mi lado. Llamándome a seguirle, a ayudarle en la instauración de su Reino. Su invitación viene directamente de su corazón, que quiere una respuesta de amor.
«En realidad, esta «injusticia» del jefe sirve para provocar, en quien escucha la parábola, un salto de nivel, porque aquí Jesús no quiere hablar del problema del trabajo y del salario justo, ¡sino del Reino de Dios! Y el mensaje es éste: en el Reino de Dios no hay desocupados, todos están llamados a hacer su parte; y todos tendrán al final la compensación que viene de la justicia divina —no humana, ¡por fortuna!—, es decir, la salvación que Jesucristo nos consiguió con su muerte y resurrección. Una salvación que no ha sido merecida, sino donada, para la que “los últimos serán los primeros y los primeros, los últimos”. Con esta parábola, Jesús quiere abrir nuestros corazones a la lógica del amor del Padre, que es gratuito y generoso.»
