“In Bethlehem we discover that the life of God runs through the veins of humanity. If we accept it, history changes starting from each one of us. For when Jesus changes the heart, the center of life is no longer my hungry and selfish self, but he who is born and lives for love. As we are called tonight to go up to Bethlehem, the house of bread, let us ask ourselves: What is the food of my life that I cannot do without, is it the Lord or is it someone else? Then, as we enter the grotto and identify in the tender poverty of the Child a new fragrance of life, that of simplicity, let us ask ourselves: Do I really need so many things, so many complicated recipes for living? Am I capable of dispensing with so many superfluous complements in order to choose a simpler life? In Bethlehem, next to Jesus, we see people who have walked, like Mary, Joseph and the shepherds. Jesus is the Bread of the way. He does not like heavy, long and sedentary digestions, but asks us to get up quickly from the table to serve, like bread broken for others. Let us ask ourselves: at Christmas, do I break my bread with him who has none?”
Pope Francis, Homily at Holy Mass on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2018.
