Catholic.Net celebrates 20 years online

Mexico, June 29, 2020-. This year, the portal Catholic.Net celebrates 20 years of offering its services online. To give thanks to God for this anniversary, a celebration was held at the Insigne y Nacional Basílica de Santa María de Guadalupe, in Mexico City. Héctor Mario Pérez Villareal, auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Mexico, presided over the celebration in the presence of the Guadalupe town council.

At the beginning of the year 2000, when the Internet was beginning to expand, the idea of creating this portal arose: “This initiative was created to offer a meeting place for Catholics around the world, where they could find guidance and formation on religious, spiritual and human topics, always attached to the magisterium of the Church. Today, after a long history, Catholic.Net has more than 6 million visitors from all over the world, believers and non-believers,” said Pablo Perez de la Vega, director of the Portal.

At the beginning of the celebration, Canon Juan Raymundo Maya Paz, the main sacristan of the Basilica, welcomed the “virtual pilgrimage” that collaborators and users made to give thanks for the anniversary, commenting that “Catholic.Net carries out a great work through electronic media sharing culture, the word of the Pope and the magisterium of the Church and we hope that it continues in this work for many years to come”.

The Mass was transmitted live on the official channel of the Basilica of Guadalupe, and was shared simultaneously on Catholic.Net's social networks: Facebook, YouTube and Twitter, receiving congratulations from bishops, friends and people who have followed the channel for years.

At the end of the ceremony, Bishop Hector Mario Perez Villareal, congratulated Catholic.Net for its 20th anniversary, for all the work they do and for the more than six million people who visit it, people who are always seeking to know Jesus better. He asked them to continue fulfilling their mission of making Jesus better known.

Pablo Perez de la Vega, current director of the apostolate, thanked all the people who have contributed to making Catholic.net one of the leading Catholic websites today. He mainly thanked Lucrecia Rego de Planas, founder and first director, for her work, leadership and international vision, as well as responding to the needs of the site's users.

During this anniversary year, its various platforms will host events and have several surprises for its users.
