Since the second week of the quarantine, which began in Manila on March 23, some families of the Everest Academy Manila and the Missionary Family of Manila have gone out to meet the most needy people in four urban areas (barangays).
This is a sector of the population that literally earns its living from the daily bread - rice, rather - and, since they have been out of work for so long, they no longer have money to buy food.
As of April 25, the families of the College have donated 800 kg of fish, 5750 kg of rice, and 1000 bags of food (3 kg of rice, sardines and meat in cans, eggs) and 400 masks and other basic necessities.
Fr. Luis Felipe Villalobos, LC, chaplain of Everest International Academy, assisted in the distribution of the food that was donated by many families of the Everest educational community.
When news of the quarantine broke, Missionary Family Manila's president, Mr. Edgar Gatchalian, commented that it would be a shame not to do something for others, as there would be no evangelistic missions for the first time in nine years in the town of Laguna (south of Manila), where he and his family usually go on mission. But one of the residents of Laguna, and a Missionary Family collaborator, called to ask for help in the form of food and it was then that the members of the Missionary Family went into action.
To do so, Anton and Mia Gonzalez, two new CR associate members, transformed their driveway once or twice a week into an assembly line for hundreds of food packages, relying on the support of their children and others who work with them for the big task.
Above all, the aim was to serve those most in need with a message of solidarity and hope.
