The Legionaries of Christ are firmly committed to creating and maintaining safe environments for minors and vulnerable adults who have contact with Legionaries and who participate in our activities. Since 2014, measures have been in place to prevent, clear procedures to act immediately on any allegations that arise and report them to the authorities. The first priority is the good and healing of the victim and the prevention of abuse.

Since 2014, we have established prevention measures, and clear procedures to act immediately on any allegations that arise and report them to the authorities. The first priority is the good and healing of the victim and the prevention of abuse.
Accredited by Praesidium
as an institution that achieves the highest standard in abuse prevention
The Congregation of the Legionaries of Christ submits to the most demanding standards in the creation of safe environments, designed by the independent international agency Praesidium, which specializes in child abuse prevention measures and their evaluation. Every three years it examines and certifies compliance and correct implementation of these requirements, which are updated over time.
Coordinators of Safe Environments in the world and institutional channel for listening to victims
In all countries where the Legion of Christ is present, there is a person who coordinates the creation of safe environments, and who is the institutional listening channel for complaints and attention to victims.

Aware of how difficult it can be for a victim to approach the institution in which he or she suffered abuse, the Legionaries of Christ have requested the collaboration at the international level of a completely independent channel for listening to and attending to victims.
It is Eshma, an independent, professional and specialized channel for victims of sexual abuse, power and conscience in the Church.

Publication of cases
On March 22, 2020, the First Annual Truth, Justice and Healing Report was published, in which the Legionaries of Christ worldwide were accountable for their commitments to care for victims of abuse and create safe environments. Since then, an accountability report has been published every year.
Since 2020, all cases of Legion of Christ priests who are known to have committed abuse against minors have been published individually in each country.

Aware of the difficulty that it can unravel for a victim to approach the institution in which he or she suffered abuse, the Legionaries of Christ requested since 2019 the collaboration at the international level of a completely independent channel of listening and care for victims.

Public and published commitments
The Legionaries of Christ makes public its commitments to promote paths of healing with victims, to continue to grow in generating safe environments and in addressing the causes and consequences of the phenomenon of sexual abuse of minors in its past. They are published and recalled each year in the Truth, Justice and Healing Report.

Accountability with victims at the core
Every public commitment requires accountability for the commitments made. Since 2019, the Legionaries of Christ publishes globally the Truth, Justice and Healing Report, with the steps taken in the commitments made.

___ANNUAL REPORTS TRUTH, JUSTICE AND HEALING
Report 1941-2019
It collects all the cases of abuse in the history of the Congregation worldwide after an internal investigation, and allows the 2020 General Chapter to face the reality of abuse in its history and the means to undertake paths of healing for the victims so that such a thing never happens again.
I Truth, Justice and Healing Report, 2020
It accounts for the commitments made by the government of the Congregation, publishes the names of the abusers and presents the agreement with an independent channel for the care of victims. Explains the reasons for publishing the names.
II Truth, Justice and Healing Report, 2021
Corresponds to the Government's actions implemented during 2021, and presents the systematic international reparations program, and the healing paths undertaken with victims through both the independent channel and proactive outreach to victims. It incorporates a comprehensive timeline of steps taken since 2006.
III Truth, Justice and Healing Report, 2022
It reports for the third consecutive year on the commitments undertaken by the Congregation. Addressed primarily to victims, it reports on the paths of healing, the implementation of the international program for reparation and support to victims created by the Congregation and the certification and development of the safe environment policy implemented since 2014.
Stable economic reparation program
and victim assistance
The Congregation is aware that no reparation can make the harm caused by abuse disappear or compensate for it. However, it seeks to offer integral reparation to contribute to justice and to facilitate the healing of the victim.
The Congregation of the Legionaries of Christ believes that financial reparation, along with care and accompaniment, can help to alleviate, at least in part, the burden carried by those who bear this wound. It is an international and stable program.
